Alfred Health is well renowned for providing a comprehensive level of care, we treat patients from varying cultures and backgrounds, providing medical staff with a range of complex case presentations. As a Level 1 Trauma Centre, our service treats over half of all major Victorian trauma cases. The Trauma unit is a 40 bed ward plus four major trauma emergency resuscitation/theatre bays. We also have an onsite helipad. In addition to our trauma service, The Alfred’s Emergency Department operates 24 hours a day and is one of the state's busiest emergency departments.

The Alfred Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit is the largest in Australia, admitting approximately 3,000 patients a year. The state-of-the-art 60 cubicle unit that has the most acute patients.

We provide a range of general and specialty medicine as well as comprehensive surgical services at Alfred Health.

The Alfred Research Alliance is a vibrant collaborative community in Melbourne, dedicated to excellence in medical research and education. In collaboration with multiple leading research organisations such as Monash University, National Trauma Research Institute, Baker Institute, and Burnet Institute.

Our Junior Medical Staff are strongly encouraged and supported in attending weekly education sessions. The curriculum is tailored specifically to your needs in excelling to the best of your abilities. It is also a great way to socialise with your fellow colleagues and learn from each other. The program runs on a fortnightly timetable with General Education alternating with stream specific education (Physician, Surgical, Critical Care).

In addition, each unit has their own education sessions specific to that speciality. This includes but is not limited to unit education meetings, journal club, grand rounds and bedside education.

Support and Wellbeing

Alfred Health staff’s supervision, support, and wellbeing is of huge importance. All junior medical staff are invited to partake in a mentor program to provide supervision and support throughout your time with Alfred Health. There are also speciality supervisors for each unit to provide career guidance and professional development. You will have a rotation supervisor for each term to assist with your learning, feedback, and assessments. The Medical Education Unit is always available for further support, as is the supervisor of training in your chosen field, Director of Prevocational Education, Director of Clinical Training and Director of Medical Services. Lastly there are online resources available through the Alfred Health Doctor’s Resource page.
