More surgery planned for Sandringham Hospital

The change, which is currently being worked through with surgical staff, is part of a series of improvements that will cement the bayside hospital as a key player in the effort to reduce Victoria’s elective surgery waiting list.

Alfred Health chief executive Prof Andrew Way said Sandringham Hospital is now in a position to further support the health of its community.

“This change would see surgeons spending more hours at Sandringham Hospital each week, doing more procedures, on more patients,” Prof Way said.

“This is a positive change for our community, at a time the system needs it most.”

Under the new model, which is under consultation with surgeons from The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital, the general surgical units at both hospitals become one, working together under a larger combined program to improve patient care. 

“General surgery would continue at both campuses, and will see an increase in the overall volume of general surgery performed at Sandringham Hospital,” he said.

“The change will also lead to better supervision of surgical trainees, meaning improved support for our senior surgeons of tomorrow.”

Sandringham Hospital was recently named as one of the Victorian Government’s nominated Rapid Access Hubs – a program that will soon see further increases to elective surgery. Stay tuned for more detail about this change.
