Minister for Health Jill Hennessy has officially opened the $2.5 million Sandringham Community Bank® Day Procedure Centre at Sandringham Hospital.

The purpose-built Day Procedure Centre is a win for the local community, providing a designated space for patients pre- and post-surgery without having to travel.

Director of Nursing at Sandringham Hospital, Judy Reeves, said the first patients were able to experience the centre last Monday and feedback has been really positive.

“We first had a vision to build a day procedure centre at this hospital back in 2014 and it is with great delight that we are able to officially launch it today,” Mrs Reeves said.

“From the outset, we have been overwhelmed by the strength of support from our community, which has allowed us to deliver this fantastic facility for our patients.”

The centre was established in response to a 50 per cent increase in demand for same-day surgeries at Sandringham Hospital. These include orthopaedic, general, ophthalmology and gynaecology surgery.

The facility features private consultation rooms, a designated pick-up and drop-off zone, and comfortable patient recliners. The unique, modern space improves patient flow and allows patients a calm environment to prepare for and recover from their surgery.

"Special thanks to Sandringham Community Bank® - your generous donation was absolutely key in helping realise our vision," Mrs Reeves said.

"Thank you also to the Black Rock Sports Auxiliary for your longstanding support and the PRG 24-Hour Charity Bike Ride - who kick-started the capital appeal and have made a tremendous contribution to this project."
