Infectious Diseases clinical trials

Our Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Unit (CRU) conducts single and multi-centre investigator and industry-initiated studies.

About us

The Infectious Diseases CRU conducts the highest quality clinical research to generate the evidence to improve our understanding and management of infectious diseases. This research ranges from first-in-human translational studies through to Phase III clinical trials and covers all aspects of infectious diseases including the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of infections.

We have subspeciality expertise in clinical trials for HIV, hepatitis C, infections in immunocompromised hosts, influenza, COVID-19 and bacterial infections requiring hospitalised care.

We conduct studies such as:

  • Testing the efficacy and safety of new or novel drug treatments
  • Collecting data from populations, typically involving large numbers of participants followed for many years
  • Observing the specifics of a group at a single point in time

We are based at The Alfred and have close links with other primary and tertiary health care providers with similar interests, including:

What are Phase I, II, III or IV clinical trials?

There are four different phases of a clinical trial. Each phase is represented by a roman numeral.

Our focus

  • International multi-site clinical trials for new treatments in infectious diseases including HIV, hepatitis C, influenza and clostridium difficile
  • Clinical trials in collaboration with the Doherty Institute in the field of HIV cure
  • Leading or participating in multi-site surveillance and observational studies such as, FluCAN (The Influenza Complications Alert Network) and the Australian HIV Observational Database
  • Studies in general infectious diseases as a member of the Australian Society for Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Network
  • Support for research implementation, monitoring and ethics applications for our collaborators
  • Related infectious diseases clinical research

Our achievements

  • In partnership with the Doherty Institute, we are conducting a detailed study of virus in people with well-controlled HIV. Researchers are looking to see which cell types contain this latent virus, whether the virus is infectious and if there are ways to get rid of it completely.
  • We are the Melbourne site for NIVO-LD and Titan clinical trials with the aim of discovering a cure for HIV.
  • A/Prof James McMahon is leading a clinical trial on whether antiviral Favipiravir can work against COVID-19.
