Australia’s leading hospital for organ donation
The Federal Assistant Minister for Health Fiona Nash visited The Alfred to launch DonateLife Week and to recognise the hard work and dedication of staff that make organ and tissue donation possible for patients in need at a second chance of life.
During her visit the Minister spoke with staff who witness the life-changing gift of organ donation week in and week out.
The Minister said not only is The Alfred a leader in organ and tissue donation, it is in a unique position to see the benefits that transplantation can bring.
"In 2014 The Alfred achieved the highest annual outcome for organ donors of any Australian hospital since national records began in 1989,"
"Today I have been impressed by the dedication and professionalism of the staff involved in the most delicate and challenging situations. I commend them for their commitment and compassion.
"The Alfred stands out as a premier hospital for organ and tissue donation as well as transplantation and I want all hospitals to make every effort to be prepared, receptive and ready when the rare opportunity comes for organ donation."
In the lead up to DonateLife Week (August 2-9), Minister Nash is calling on more Australian's to register as an organ donor and to discuss their decision and wishes with loved ones.
Minister Nash said it is clear from speaking with Alfred staff that it is much easier for families in tragic circumstances, to agree to organ donation if they had prior knowledge of their loved ones wishes.
The Minister also took the opportunity to meet with a donor family (pictured) Melanie (left) and Chloe (right) and grateful heart transplant recipient Mark (far right) who shared their experience of the true impact of organ donation.
DonateLife Week (Sunday 2 - Sunday 9 August) is the national awareness week to promote family discussion and registration of organ and tissue donation decisions.
