First patients give thumbs up to ED redevelopment

First day in the new section of ED
Ready to care: Deputy Director of the Emergency and Trauma Centre, Dr Carl Luckhoff with Director of Emergency Nursing, Bec Atkins

Doors to the new section of The Alfred’s growing emergency department opened today, with the first patients impressed by the new look.

The milestone marks the midway point in the multi-million-dollar redevelopment of the Eva and Les Erdi Emergency and Trauma Centre, with the partial shift into the new section now enabling building to commence in the vacated treatment areas.

Director of emergency nursing, Bec Atkins said the new entrance, waiting room and treatment spaces have also been welcomed by staff, who are looking forward to caring for patients in a new and modern environment that better supports the way they work.

When complete, the emergency and trauma centre will sport an increase in treatment spaces and double the diagnostic imaging capacity – supporting the growing number of Victorians needing access to urgent care at The Alfred day and night.

Completion of the Eva and Les Erdi Emergency and Trauma Centre redevelopment is expected late 2017-early 2018.
