Future of HIV care at The Alfred takes shape

Alfred Health COO Prof Simone Alexander and Director of HIV Medicine Prof Jenny Hoy reflect on the legacy of Fairfield House

The legacy of almost three decades of HIV care at Fairfield House is set to live on, with the upcoming opening of the new Fairfield Centre at The Alfred.

The new centre – part of the Department of Infectious Diseases – will move to a new home on the hospital precinct within Alfred Lane House.

Following the closure of the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital in 1996, Victoria’s HIV Service transitioned to The Alfred, paving the way for what would become Fairfield House – a hub of community and care for the state’s community living with HIV.

“One of the reasons I'm still alive is this place, and Fairfield Hospital,” said David Menadue, former patient and member of Alfred Health’s HIV Services Advisory Group, as he reflected on his memories of Fairfield House.

“They made you feel accepted, that you weren't just a number in the health system, and that you were worth fighting for.”

Infectious Diseases clinician and Director of HIV Medicine Professor Jenny Hoy agrees.

“The legacy is the safe space that was created,” said Prof Hoy. “The people who provide the care and the people receiving the care are all so special.”

Now, the future of HIV care at The Alfred is set to continue the Fairfield House legacy in a new home.

“I'm so pleased we've still got somewhere,” said David Menadue. “The Alfred is committed to us.”
