Temporary changes to Sandringham Hospital services to ensure safe patient care

Alfred Health’s Chief Operating Officer Simone Alexander says this temporary change is a planned response to ensure safe patient care while managing current workforce challenges at this stage of the pandemic.

“Sandringham Hospital’s Emergency Department will remain open to the local community 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“If you think you may need surgical care – for conditions such as broken bones, or appendicitis – please go directly to The Alfred or Monash Children’s Hospital for children, so you get the care you need as quickly as possible.

“These changes to Sandringham’s service mean we can better support our staff to deliver safe and critical patient care, during the pandemic,” says Ms Alexander.

“They will increase the number of staff available to provide care across all of Alfred Health’s services, which is essential in the current workforce shortages.

“It’s necessary in the current environment to make these difficult decisions and appreciate the support of the Sandringham community as well as our staff.”

The Women’s at Sandringham maternity service, as well as general medicine, radiology and pathology services, will remain unchanged.

Urgent outpatient appointments will be moved to Caulfield Hospital or The Alfred and patients will be notified directly.

Ambulance services will not be transporting patients to Sandringham Hospital as part of this change.
