What is the NDIS?
The National Disability insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to support people with permanent disabilities who need long-term support.
If you need help because of your permanent disability, the NDIS gives you choice and control over how, and where you receive the support you need. Ultimately, it's about allowing Australians who have a disability to live the fullest life they can as productive members of society.
- It is available to Australians and permanent residents under the age of 65. (Those over 65 have access to other support services)
- As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a life-long approach, investing in people with a disability to improve their lives
- It also provides people with a disability, their family and carers with information and referrals to existing support services in the community.
- By 2020, it is estimated that the NDIS will support about 460,000 Australians with a disability.
