Prof David Kaye

Professor Kaye is the Director of Cardiology and a senior cardiologist in the Heart Failure & Transplant Service at The Alfred.

As Director of the Cardiology Department, Prof Kaye is committed to supporting his team in their goal to deliver the best cardiovascular care to both the local Alfred Health community and more widely to all Victorians who are experiencing the most complex forms of cardiovascular illness. In conjunction, he and his team strive to ensure that they are at the forefront of cardiac innovation, research and education.

Research

Prof Kaye is well known internationally for his research in the fields of heart failure, heart transplant and artificial heart device support. His research combines a broad portfolio of techniques including conventional clinical trials, detailed cardiac catheter studies which investigates the intricacies of cardiac function together with studies based in the basic science laboratory. Prof Kaye's research team includes an outstanding group of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, research and clinical nurses and laboratory scientists. He and his team regularly supervise PhD students. David has published over 550 research papers and brought in over $100M  in research funding.

Most significant clinical trial

Working with Prof McGiffin, David led the first multicentre trial of a novel heart storage system that markedly extended the time in a which donor heart can be kept safely outside the body before a heart transplant. This study has revolutionized the way in which heart transplant can be coordinated making more donor hearts available and reducing the risk.
