Diagnostic Imaging & Interventional Radiology clinical trials

Established in 2002, The Alfred Radiology Research Unit was the first radiology research unit in Australia. We continue to be a leader in cutting-edge radiology and interventional radiology research. We are a preferred Australian site for many trials, including vascular and oncology device trials and conducting first-in-human to pivotal and post-market trials.

Leading the way in clinical trials

We are committed to partnering with industries and organisations specialising in clinical trials and research.

About us

Our research focuses on improving patient care through evidence-based medicine and partnering with industry to facilitate the translation of innovation into clinical practice.

Diagnostic imaging and Interventional radiology has an essential role across all medical disciplines for the diagnosis of diseases, monitoring of therapy and for treatment using image guided, minimally invasive procedures. This is reflected in the broad range of internal, collaborative and commercially-sponsored research conducted by our department.

Our clinical trials are underpinned by state-of the art imaging facilities and the support of our medical, radiographer, medical physics and nursing staff.

What are the different phases of device clinical trials?

There are four different phases of a medical device clinical trial.

Our vision

  • Provide the most effecting and safe evidence-based treatments to our patients through clinical trial research.
  • Partner with industry to expedite innovation into clinical practice.
  • Collaborate with academics and researchers across all medical disciplines to develop the best integrated care for our patients.
  • Conduct clinical research in medical physics and radiation safety.
  • Develop and use technology to improve diagnostic imaging and reporting with artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Facilitate research at Alfred Health by establishing registry-linked, image data repositories and assisting in the development of medical data search tools.

Our focus

Targeted cancer treatments

  • Irreversible electroporation (Nanoknife®) for the treatment of inoperable pancreatic and liver tumours
  • Novel embolic agents for the treatment of hypervascular tumours
  • Using AI for brain tumour prognosis

Interventional radiology procedures

  • High blood pressure and type 2 diabetes with arterial denervation treatments
  • Peripheral vascular disease with novel balloon angioplasty treatments
  • Venogenic erectile dysfunction treatments
  • Osteoporotic spine fractures with vertebroplasty treatments
  • Endometriosis treatments

Interventional radiology procedures for trauma

  • Trauma related internal vascular injury embolisation treatments
  • Save my spleen – splenic artery embolisation in trauma treatment

Other areas of research

  • Radiation safety and medical physics
  • Post transplant renal biopsies
  • The national brain trauma study

Our achievements

  • We are the industry preferred and lead site in Australia for device trials.
  • We conducted the first safety study on irreversible electroporation for the treatment of inoperable tumours in the liver, including rare liver cancers, kidney, lung and prostate and are now conducting a study into pancreatic cancer.
  • We are establishing the first Australian Interventional Radiology registry.
  • A dedicated medical physics team conducting research to ensure best practice in the use of radiation to minimise risk to our patients and staff while ensuring diagnostic image quality.
  • Facilitating all Alfred researchers by:
    • Establishing an imaging repository platform that can be connected to new or existing clinical registries.
    • Assisting the Data Analytical Services department in the development of medical data search tools.
