Dr Shane Nanayakkara

Dr Shane Nanayakkara is an Interventional cardiologist at The Alfred, specialising in minimally invasive treatment of coronary and structural heart disease, with a research focus on the application of artificial intelligence in cardiology.

He completed his medical degree at Monash University, followed by advanced training in cardiology at The Alfred and a PhD in heart failure, with award-winning research in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. He subsequently completed fellowships in both coronary and structural heart interventions.

Dr Nanayakkara performs coronary angiography and stenting, as well as transcatheter valve procedures including TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) and clip-based mitral and tricuspid valve repair. He is also experienced in the assessment of exercise hemodynamics and has a strong interest in preventative cardiology, with a focus on diet and exercise as the foundation for heart health.

His research includes the development of AI for cardiac imaging and outcome prediction, as well as improving techniques in TAVI and running cutting edge drug trials for heart failure. He has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications and is actively involved in medical education and mentorship, while delivering accessible, evidence-based care across metropolitan and regional communities.
