Clinical service overview
Our two ENT units - ENT 1 and ENT 2 - provide ear, nose and throat surgery at The Alfred.
- ENT 1 manages routine otolaryngology, and has a special interest in head and neck surgery, including cancer surgery. The unit also provides a service in functional endoscopic sinus surgery.
- ENT 2 has a special interest in Otology, Otoneurology and vestibular problems.
Exclusion criteria
Statewide Referral Criteria apply to some Ear, Nose & Throat conditions.
In addition, the following conditions are not routinely seen at Alfred Health:
- Patients who are being treated for the same condition at another Victorian public hospital
- Children under 18 years of age
- Cosmetic surgery other than those meeting the specific indications outlined in the Victorian Department of Health Aesthetic Procedures and indications for surgery in Victorian public health services.
- Snoring without sleep apnoea: sleep study must be performed prior to referral – refer to General Respiratory and Sleep Medicine
- Allergic or vasomotor rhinitis – refer to Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
- Septal deviation without nasal obstruction
- Post nasal drip with intermittent nasal obstruction.

We accept GP and specialist referrals to this service.
All referrals are triaged by the service according to clinical urgency.
Patients requiring immediate assessment should be sent to the Emergency & Trauma Centre.
If a patient requires surgery, they will be placed on a surgical waiting list. The patient may also need to attend a Pre-Admission Clinic prior to surgery.
To refer your patient, complete and fax a referral to us. For urgent referrals, also contact the service Registrar to discuss the case.
To ensure appropriate and timely triage, include all demographic and clinical details as well as relevant investigation results.
If you are concerned about any delay of the appointment or if there is any deterioration in your patient’s condition, contact the service Registrar on call on (03) 9076 2000.
