Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Fatty Liver (MAFLD) Clinic

Health professional information

View Patient Information
The clinic provides a co-ordinated multidisciplinary approach to managing MAFLD that addresses both the underlying liver disease and frequently associated co-morbidities including obesity, diabetes and/or insulin resistance (IR), and hyperlipidaemia (high cholesterol).

Clinical service overview

Patients will undergo risk stratification with Fibroscan to assess the severity of liver disease in order to identify those at higher risk of developing cirrhosis and related complications. In addition, underlying risk factors for cardiac and worsening liver disease including obesity, IR and type II diabetes need to be addressed in a timely manner, as well as determination of their cardiovascular risk profile as the latter is the most frequent cause of death in these patients. Finally, a multidisciplinary clinic setting provides an ideal opportunity for dietary counseling and to consider patients for investigator-initiated and sponsored clinical studies of promising therapeutic agents given the current lack of safe and effective therapies for MAFLD.

MBS-billed service

On the doctor’s behalf, Alfred Health can bulk bill the cost of the consultation for some services through Medicare. This means there is no out of pocket expense to the patient.

MBS-billed services require a current referral. Provide your patient with a 12 month referral to see the specialist of your choice at the requested clinic.

Referrals must be addressed to a named specialist or the Head of service, listed at the top of this page. Clinic consultants are listed on every clinic page.

Note that from time to time, your patient may be seen by another specialist in the clinic, in order to expedite their treatment.
