What we do
In this clinic, we look after people who develop visual problems that is not explained by an eye disease. The clinic is staffed by four trained neuro-ophthalmologists and two neuro-ophthalmology fellows.
Our clinic has a nurse coordinator and we work with a team of orthoptists who do visual field tests and visual function measurement. Our clinic overlaps with an Ophthalmology Clinic and we often work together to solve complex visual complaints.
Our Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) Clinic is the first in Victoria to provide comprehensive care for adults with this condition. Our multidisciplinary group include physicians, consultant nurses and dietitians. As needed, patients may also be referred to our IIH endocrinologist.
We commonly see people with a range of conditions that affect the brain and nervous system. Some of the conditions are listed below:
- Unexplained raised intracranial pressure (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension) that can cause swollen optic nerve, visual loss and headache
- Visual loss because of optic nerve inflammation (optic neuritis) or damage (optic neuropathy)
- Unusual eye movements
- Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAAION)
- Double vision
- People with auto-immune conditions such as myasthenia gravis or sarcoidosis
- Optic disc Drusen
- Temporal arteritis or giant cell arteritis
- Transient visual loss or visual symptoms
How to access this clinic
Referral to this service
You need a referral letter from your GP, medical practitioner or community optometrist to access this service.
Your doctor will need to fax your referral letter to us. We will be in contact with you in clinically recommended times, depending on waiting list length. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time.
