Each of the surgical specialties have an appointed prevocational surgical supervisor who is available to mentor and guide trainees. Upon appointment, trainees are asked to preference their surgical specialty of choice, which is then used to assign an appropriate surgical supervisor.

Ours prevocational program aims to optimise trainees for entrance into the RACS surgical training program. Support with curriculum vitae optimisation, research opportunities, obtaining supportive references and interview practice are services offered as part of the program.

All trainees have allocated weekly protected training time and are expected to attend the weekly in hours educational lecture series.

The program is revised annually according to feedback from our trainees. The aim is to continue to improve opportunities for our prevocational surgical cohort. Every year we have a consistent number of trainees successfully entering surgical training from Alfred Health.

Psychiatry ( PGY2&3+)

Alfred Mental & Addiction Health (AMAH) offers year-long Psychiatry Hospital Medical Officer positions for post graduate year 3+, as well as 3-month psychiatry rotations within the PGY2 Medical pathway. Rotating and substantive HMOs have the opportunity to work in multidisciplinary teams across the AMAH service, including Adult Inpatient & Community as well as Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. These experiences will consolidate foundational skills and knowledge in psychiatry, in a supportive and collaborative setting. Junior doctors with experience in psychiatry will find that the skills they acquire are applicable not only within a psychiatric context but in working with patients and families in general practice, emergency, and specialist medical or surgical settings.

HMOs will work in an environment with a strong emphasis on supporting junior doctor wellbeing, fostering a positive workplace culture, and providing high-quality recovery-focused care. There are opportunities to be involved in formal and informal peer support and mentoring, as well as leadership opportunities such as participation in quality improvement initiatives and consultation groups. All AMAH junior doctors are able to access the structured psychiatry education programme, which include weekly lectures, small-group tutorials, and Grand Round presentations focusing on complex clinical cases and research innovation. This is in addition to “on the ground” teaching and direct supervision provided by experienced supervisors. HMOs at AMAH interested in pursuing vocational training are supported to apply for RANZCP accredited positions. Previous experience working in psychiatry at AMAH provides a competitive advantage for HMOs applying for vocational training.
