Community and staff are welcome to attend Caulfield Hospital’s annual ANZAC Ceremony, held the day before ANZAC Day on Tuesday 24th April.

We are honoured to have Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld AC, OBE deliver the commemorative address at the event.

The Centenary of ANZAC 2014 to 2018 is also a special time for the hospital as we recognise 100 years since doors first opened to treat soldiers returning from the First World War.

Caulfield Hospital Centenary Exhibition: Remembering our beginnings

Following the service, refreshments will be served and you can view an exhibition focused on Caulfield Hospital’s beginnings. As Australia’s young men and women made the journey across oceans to serve in the First World War, no one could have predicted just how many would be in need of rehabilitation, which at that time was an emerging field of medicine. The hospital was established as the Number 11 Australian General Hospital to care for and rehabilitate soldiers and nurses.

Glen Eira Council has kindly allowed Caulfield Hospital to re-print material that formed part of its 2016 exhibition Wounded Soldier. Alfred Health has added to this collection and we are proud to display this history – including memorabilia and artefacts from the hospital’s earlier years.

The exhibit highlights the important research the hospital undertook to improve treatment and rehabilitation of its patients as evidenced by its progress of artificial limbs and the introduction of masseurs and physiotherapy by 1918.
