Melbourne Sexual Health Centre named Melbourne Award finalists for excellence in LGBTIQA+ community care
Melbourne Sexual Health Centre’s (MSHC) longstanding commitment to the LGBTIQA+ community has been recognised by the City of Melbourne – naming it a finalist for the Melbourne Awards 2023.
MSHC epidemiologist Prof Eric Chow said becoming a finalist in the LGBTIQA+ category is a huge recognition of the centre and all staff for their countless hours of hard work.
“It’s important to acknowledge that it’s through collaboration with our partner organisations and the support and engagement of the community that we have achieved this,” Prof Chow said.
Registered nurse Mark Thompson said that, while the award’s winner won’t be known until 11 November, the team feels the nomination is achievement enough.
“It validates the care, our ethos, and how passionate we are about caring for our community,” Mr Thompson said.
“We try and make our care as non-judgmental and as targeted as possible, so that we’re not imposing beliefs, stigmas and discriminations that don’t need to be there. Ultimately, we want everyone to kind of feel safe and welcome and respected here.”
HIV, sexually transmitted infections and sexual health are highly stigmatised, particularly in some communities added Prof Chow.
“If we are chosen as the successful recipient of this award, I believe this will draw attention to the community, start conversations and increase awareness of MSHC’s service and missions.”
“I think these discussions will be a powerful catalyst for social change to reduce social stigma around HIV, sexually transmitted infections and sexual health.”
