Serious concerns about the care of a patient at Caulfield Hospital - as reported in today's Herald Sun - were presented to Alfred Health management last week.

Following discussion with the patient’s family, we immediately notified Victoria Police and started an internal investigation.

The staff member involved was stood down, and no longer works for Alfred Health.

We are continuing to meet with the patient’s family and we thank them for bringing these issues to our attention.

We have referred the matter to AHPRA, the regulatory body for Australian health practitioners.

Alfred Health chief executive, Prof Andrew Way said the video material presented is distressing and shocking.

“This is not in keeping with the culture of advanced care that patients and families should experience in our hospitals,” Prof Way said.

“Providing the best possible care at Caulfield Hospital continues to be our focus, but incidents where patients do not feel safe should never occur. We welcome an independent investigation, to be undertaken by Safer Care Victoria.”

Alfred Health is cooperating fully with the police investigation.
