The Audiology and Otoneurology Diagnostic Service provides a specialty service that excels in the assessment and management of disorders of the ear, including hearing impairment, vestibular disorders, dizziness and communication problems.

Clinical service overview

Hearing assessments including-

  • Pure Tone Audiometry
  • Impedance
  • Speech Discrimination
  • Auditory Brainstem Response  
  • Cortical Evoked Response Audiometry

Vestibular function assessments including:

  • Calorics
  • Video Head Impulse
  • Saccades
  • Pursuit
  • Rotational Chair
  • Static Bias
  • Smooth Pursuit
  • Video-nystagmography & Hallpike, Positional & Gaze
  • Electrocochleography
  • Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential
  • Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential

We also provide advice about tinnitus, suitability for hearing aids & assistive listening technology.

Referral process

For hearing problems, refer your patient to the Ear Nose & Throat clinic. Audiology can assess hearing on the same afternoon as the ENT appointment if required.

For balance problems refer your patient to Ear Nose & Throat clinic or Neurology clinics. The specialist doctor can refer to us for further investigation.

Inpatients at the Alfred Hospital may be seen for assessment if required.

Inpatients at the Caulfield Hospital may be seen for hearing and communication support.

There are no diagnostic assessment facilities available at Caulfield or Sandringham Hospitals.
