General Medicine
Health professional information
Clinical service overview
We have a close working relationship with Caulfield Hospital and Sandringham Hospital. Some patients are transferred to these hospitals for their ongoing care.
The wards are staffed by:
- Consultant physicians in General Medicine, many of whom also have an additional subspecialty qualification such as cardiology, endocrinology, renal medicine, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, rheumatology and clinical pharmacology. These consultants supervise advanced and basic physician trainees and more junior doctors to provide comprehensive medical care. This may involve consultation with other disciplines as required
- A large nursing team with a diverse range of medical and subspecialty acute clinical experience
- An allied health team including social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nutritionists and care co-ordinator to meet the complex needs of our patients
General Medicine provides staff to supervise peri-operative management of patients and also assists in the management of medical problems in patients admitted following trauma.
Our outpatient clinics review patients following their inpatient admission, as well as manage complex care patients. General Medicine works closely with HARP to provide comprehensive multi-disciplinary community support for complex clients.
General Medicine is an important provider of supervised education and training for a number of disciplines including trainee specialists and junior doctors. Patients may be invited to assist in teaching sessions.
Exclusion criteria
This service does not routinely offer treatment for the following:
- Patients who are being treated for the same condition at another Victorian public hospital

MBS-billed service
On the doctor’s behalf, Alfred Health can bulk bill the cost of the consultation for some services through Medicare. This means there is no out of pocket expense to the patient.
MBS-billed services require a current referral. Provide your patient with a 12 month referral to see the specialist of your choice at the requested clinic.
Referrals must be addressed to a named specialist or the Head of service, listed at the top of this page. Clinic consultants are listed on every clinic page.
Note that from time to time, your patient may be seen by another specialist in the clinic, in order to expedite their treatment.
