The General Infectious Diseases service works to prevent and to treat illness, disability and death caused by a wide range of infectious diseases.

Clinical service overview

Patients can present to hospital with a range of general infectious diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, general infections, travel related infections and fevers of unknown origin which can cause severe illness. Infections may also further complicate patients in hospital with other health issues or result from surgeries.

The Infectious Diseases service encompasses:

  • An inpatient unit - dealing with a wide range of infectious issues that require admission to hospital
  • A hospital wide consult service for patients with infective issues who are under other units in the hospital
  • Infectious diseases outpatient clinics
  • Travel Medicine clinic

Consult service

Whilst under other medical and surgical specialties in the hospital, an Infectious Diseases Physician may need to assess and be involved in patient care. When a referral in requested, they will work with the primary unit who is overseeing the care and management of the patient.

Exclusion criteria

This service does not routinely offer treatment for the following:

  • Patients who are being treated for the same condition at another Victorian public hospital
  • Children under 18 years of age

Fax referral to us

We accept GP and specialist referrals to this service. 

All referrals are triaged by the service according to clinical urgency. Patients requiring immediate assessment should be sent to the Emergency & Trauma Centre. 

To refer your patient, complete and fax a referral to us. For urgent referrals, also contact the service Registrar to discuss the case.

To ensure appropriate and timely triage, include all demographic and clinical details as well as relevant investigation results. 

If you are concerned about any delay of the appointment or if there is any deterioration in your patient’s condition, contact the service Registrar on call on (03) 9076 2000.
