Clinical service overview
The Alfred Stroke Unit provides comprehensive stroke care to all patients attending The Alfred with symptoms of Stroke or TIA.
We provide access to all modern stroke treatments including thrombolysis (TPA) treatment and endovascular clot retrieval (ECR) for acute stroke. Our acute stroke team includes stroke specialist physicians, neurologists, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, dietitians and social work. The acute stroke medical team provides urgent assessment in the Emergency department of people presenting with stroke or TIA to facilitate early diagnosis, work-up and management to all people experiencing acute ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, with early access to rehabilitation in both the public and private sector. We work closely with our neurosurgical and neuroradiology colleagues to provide the best possible treatment options for all individuals under our care.
The Alfred Stroke Unit is actively involved in research to improve stroke treatment and recovery in the future. During inpatient or rehabilitation stay, patients may be asked if they are interested in being involved in research. All research conducted at The Alfred is conducted under Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principals and with the approval of The Alfred Ethics Committee.
The Australian Stroke Clinical Registry collects information about people affected by stroke managed in many hospitals in Australia, including The Alfred. This helps us improve our stroke care locally and nationally. If patients do not want information about themselves included in this registry, the stroke team can advise them how to opt-out.
A weekly Stroke & TIA Clinic provides rapid assessment for diagnosis, investigation and risk factor management of TIA, as well as follow up care after discharge to ensure everything is being done to prevent further stroke and reduce the potential for recurrent events.
