Medical Oncology at The Alfred
Medical Oncology is the treatment of cancer using chemotherapy or other medications, such as hormone therapy, targeted therapies and immunotherapy.
The Medical Oncology Unit provides a coordinated medical service for adult patients with cancer, in conjunction with the Alfred’s comprehensive surgical, intensive care, radiation and palliative care services, all co-located under the one roof.
We offer a complete range of state-of-the-art treatments for all cancers, including via clinical trials, and links to cutting edge technology and research initiatives through our close affiliation with Australia’s largest University, Monash.
Our service provides holistic and comprehensive cancer care that includes assessment, planning, treatment, referral and follow-up of patients with so-called ‘solid cancers’ (breast, lung, brain, etc.).
We accept patient referrals from community GPs and from other doctors and surgeons within and outside the Alfred. In turn, we are able to refer patients if required to leading expert doctors within the Alfred, who collectively cover almost every area of medical sub-specialty imaginable. Accordingly, the best clinical management options for each patient’s cancer are decided in multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs), wherein leading experts from different medical sub-specialties develop consensus recommendations, drawing from the latest research discoveries and technologies.
Importantly, our approach to cancer care aligns with the Victorian Cancer Plan and consensus Optimal Care Pathways of the Victorian Department of Health’s Southern Melbourne Integrated Services.
Our philosophy is simple – the health and well-being of our patients are at the heart of the care and advice we provide, and of everything we do.
