The Orthoptic Department functions in close association with the Ophthalmology Unit.
What we do
Working within the Ophthalmology outpatient clinics, Orthoptists provide support in the assessment and management of:
- Ocular Neurological disorders
- Eye disease related to diabetes
- Patients with cataracts
- Infection and inflammation
- Traumatic disease
- Patients with glaucoma
- Dry eye disorder
- Oculoplastics
- Immunological disorders and transplantation
- Ocular motility disorders
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Corneal transplantation
- Corneal cross linking
- Keratoconus management
Who we care for
The Orthoptics Department also independently provides screening services for Alfred Health patients with:
- Diabetes
- Glaucoma
- Drug toxicity
- Neurological issues effecting vision

Do you need me to bring my glasses to an appointment?
Yes, please ensure you bring ALL current glasses that you wear.
What to bring
Every time you come
- Medicare card
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it)
- Adverse drug alert card (if you have one)
- Previous X-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
- Medicines you need to take while you are here
- List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
- Glasses, hearing aid(s) and/or walking frame if needed
For a clinic appointment
- Your appointment letter
- Any special items listed on your letter
- TAC or WorkCover claim number (if relevant)
