About the centre

A new home for melanoma care and research at The Alfred – a centre that is dedicated for caring for people with melanoma and other cancers in Victoria.

Australia has the highest overall rate of melanoma in the world, and demand for melanoma and skin cancer services continues to increase.

What began as a conversation between two doctors and philanthropist Paula Fox led to the creation of a new home for melanoma care and research at The Alfred – a centre that is dedicated for caring for people with melanoma and other cancers in Victoria.

Together with the Victorian Government and Australian Government, the Fox Family, Minderoo Foundation and Monash University we have created more space to provide world class care and further improve access to lifesaving clinical trials, technology and emerging therapies.

The Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre is where researchers and clinicians work together to bring cutting edge treatment to all patients. This state-of-the-art facility, and the talented teams who will work within, helps us deliver the future of cancer care.

This purpose-built centre at The Alfred includes:

  • Modern and welcoming treatment and consultation spaces for patients, including day therapy area overlooking Melbourne’s iconic St Kilda Road and tranquil gardens.
  • A Wellness Centre, providing a dedicated home for respite, education and support services for patients, their families and carers.
  • A hub for clinical trials – enabling patients to receive access to cutting-edge treatment in the same location.
  • Integrated precision technology, promoting early detection of melanoma and connecting regional and rural patients with the very best of care.
  • On-site research laboratories, allowing patients to benefit from advancements in medicine as soon as possible.
  • World-class research and training facilities, attracting the brightest and best minds in cancer care.

The future of cancer care

Melanoma care for all Victorians

Growing up in regional Victoria, I saw the immense challenges our community faced in accessing high quality health care.

Today, I still see the vast distances some patients travel to receive their treatment, and the barriers often faced to access clinical trials that could save their lives.

That’s why I’m incredibly proud of the creation of the Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre.

A physical and virtual hub for world-class cancer care, we’re using state-of-the-art technology to support the delivery of clinical trials and outstanding patient care into the regions.

With laboratories and research taking place in the same building as patient care, we’re making sure we find meaningful solutions to some of the greatest health problems our patients face, and that they benefit from these breakthroughs as soon as possible.

Cancer care at The Alfred has always been personal. We’re continuing to build on precision technology that means our most at-risk members of the community get the care they need – in early detection, diagnosis and treatment.

Now they can receive it in a purpose-built facility that has also been designed around wellness, comfort and healing.

Cancer care needs to be about hope. That’s exactly what’s being provided at the Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre.
