Cyclists raise $130,000 for Sandringham Hospital
The PRG 24-hour Bike Ride saw 40 cyclists brave the wind and rain, cycling 15,000km in 24 hours, to raise more than $130,000 for the Sandringham Hospital Capital Appeal.
Fundraising will continue until Wednesday 20 September and includes an online auction with helmets, homewares, gym memberships, hampers and more all up for grabs. All proceeds will be donated to the appeal.
The final fundraising tally and the winners of the auction will be announced at the official handover party on Thursday 21 September at Sandringham Yacht Club.
On September 2 and 3, cyclists rotated over the 24-hour period and by the end, the team had completed 15,000km, despite average wind speeds of 20 knots for most of the ride.
“The wind was our friend, because we could fly south. The big tail wind helped one rider cycle 400kms, pedalling very fast when he went down the hill at Ricketts Point. Another cyclist completed 560km after spending most of the 24 hours on the road,” said organiser Alastair Murray.
The cyclists received plenty of support from the community with cars tooting and locals cheering and taking photos. One cyclist from the community even rode up and handed a participant $50.
The Sandringham Hospital Capital Appeal has almost reached its $2.5million target to build a new day procedure centre for the local community.
