Update on tree replacement at Sandringham Hospital

We have recently advised our neighbours that a large gumtree at Sandringham Hospital, near the boundary of Edward St, will soon be replaced due to safety concerns.
This tree has been a much-loved part of our site for just under 50 years, and we share in the community’s disappointment that it must now be replaced.
However, it is essential that we ensure the safety of patients, staff and the community.
We met with some of our closest neighbours on Friday 11 April, to share two independent arborist reports and our plans to replace this tree.
These experts have assessed the tree, citing branch failure, internal decay and structural defects as grounds for replacement.
This tree presents a significant risk to community safety, due to its decaying condition and proximity to the footpath, public areas, roads and power lines. Its position is not appropriate in a built, urban environment.
As a health service, it is our responsibility to protect the health and safety of our staff, patients and community and to manage identified risks.
We have reassured our neighbours that this tree will be replaced with a mature, evergreen Eucalyptus Pauciflora, which has been recommended by Bayside Council as a replacement species within the council area.
