The Dromana Italian Seniors Social Club did not have to look far when giving away some of its savings.

In honour of the memory of committee member Bruno Ferraro, who suffered from pulmonary fibrosis – a chronic rare lung disease – and who passed away in February, the club made a substantial donation to The Alfred.

This included $11,500 to the hospital’s pulmonary fibrosis research and another $11,500 to general research at The Alfred. The funds were among $46,000 donated to charities.

Club president Antonio Telera said that during his 10 years involvement at the club, savings had consistently been put to the side by good management and hard work.

“The unforeseen changes to the committee situation and Covid-19 created uncertainty about the future of the club, so the committee decided to give this money to charity,” he said.

“Through my research, I discovered The Alfred has been researching changes in the treatment of this disease, which is why we donated to them.”

While the club is not active during the Covid-19 lockdown and is looking for fresh blood to take control of running the club, Mr Telera hopes that the new committee and members will continue to support the community.
