Mary’s connection lives on

15 August 2023

Mary Marjory (Marj) Smart, whose generous gift in Will was recently received, had a profound connection with The Alfred.

Her third son, Michael, experienced acute kidney failure in 1974 when he was only 21. Following an extended period on dialysis, Michael received a kidney transplant at The Alfred the following year – understood to be one of the earliest kidney transplants in Australia.

Michael went on to have 26 years of good health before passing away at the age of 47.

Marj herself was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was aged 75, receiving treatment at The Alfred in the ensuing months and years.

Forever grateful for the treatment and care provided, she lived a healthy cancer-free life thereafter, actively participating in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Marj passed away at the amazing age of 101 – and her connection continues to live on, having left a gift in her Will to The Alfred.
