Walkathon raises money for The Alfred in memory of dear friend
In November 2019, for the second time around, a dedicated group of friends organised a walkathon to raise funds for The Alfred in loving memory of their dear friend, Mahima.
Mahima passed away in November 2017 after battling a rare form of cancer known as neuroendocrine cancer. Close friend Prashanthi described Mahima as a beautiful person inside and out.
"She loved life and enjoyed every bit of it. She was a fighter and always had a beautiful smile on her face. She never lost hope,” Prashanthi said.
The friends first held a walkathon in 2017, raising a stunning total of just over $5,000 for The Alfred Hospital. After deciding on a smaller event this time, the group again raised a tidy sum of $2,000. Walking through Braeside Park, the walkathon was blessed with beautiful weather on the day.
The friends not only wanted to raise awareness for their cause but to celebrate and maintain the legacy of their courageous friend. All funds raised in Mahima’s memory have been generously donated towards ongoing cancer research at The Alfred, working to discover improved treatments and rare cancer cures.
Mahima’s friends came to The Alfred Foundation office in person to present the final cheque of their funds raised and were able to tour key areas of the hospital to gain an understanding of the impact of their donation.
