‘Without them I wouldn’t be here’

30 June 2023

Jodie knows how lucky she is to be alive – and is incredibly thankful to The Alfred for its role in that. So much so that she has become one of the top fundraisers for The Alfred ahead of this month's Run Melbourne event.

Transferred to The Alfred Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in May last year with fluid around her heart and her organs shutting down, Jodie was put in an induced coma.

In that condition for a week and half, she eventually spent about three months in the hospital before being transferred for rehabilitation in Caulfield.

There she spent another four weeks, where she “had to learn how to walk again, shower myself, feed myself, all the everyday tasks”.

This marked the first time that Jodie walked in her recovery last year, in July.

While Jodie is slowly making her way back to a sense of normality, including a gradual return to work, she spotted a way to show her appreciation to the amazing specialist care that she received at The Alfred – through taking part in Run Melbourne.

“The least I could do was give back to The Alfred with everything that they’ve done,” Jodie said. “Without them I wouldn’t be here.

“Not just the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists, it’s everyone: the cleaners, the orderlies, the hospitality people.”

Jodie, pictured with her dog Marley, was back home by September.

Jodie is taking part in the 5km event. Initially setting a goal of raising $200, she has been blown away by the support she has received from family, friends and work colleagues alike to become one of the top fundraisers for The Alfred.

“I’m so thankful for The Alfred,” she said. “They are amazing and they continue to be amazing.

“You just never know when you will need them. I’m so grateful that The Alfred hospital was there for me and continue to be with any ongoing medical issues.”
