The Victorian Non-Occupational Post Exposure Prophylaxis (NPEP) Service was established at The Alfred in August 2005. The Victorian NPEP Service is a state-wide service and operates on a hub and spoke model.

Clinical service overview

The Alfred is the ‘hub' and is responsible for the administration of the service including the co-ordination of sites where NPEP is available throughout Victoria.

The 'spokes' of the service are the particular sites where NPEP can be accessed, including HIV specialist general practitioners, certain hospital emergency departments and Melbourne Sexual Health Centre.

NPEP is a course of anti-HIV medication commenced within 72 hours of exposure to HIV and taken for 28 days with the aim of reducing HIV infection. NPEP is taken primarily for sexual and injecting drug use exposures in the community and is reserved for exposures where the HIV risk is significant.
