Major Trauma Service

What we do

The Trauma Service includes:

• An onsite helipad
• Four major trauma emergency resuscitation/theatre bays
• A 40 bed Trauma ward (5 West)
• State-of-the-art 50 bed ICU with 10 designated trauma beds
• A Hyperbaric service
• The Victorian Adult Burns unit

In October 2019, a new purpose-built trauma ward, 5 West, opened at The Alfred, located on Main Ward Block, Level 5 West. The 40 bed ward provides purpose built facilities and innovative spaces for all patients and staff, including a dedicated surgical procedure zone, active therapy zone, better family areas and new medical equipment.

The new ward has replaced Ward 2 West.

The Alfred Trauma Registry

The Alfred Trauma Registry was established in late 1988, and serves to detail all major and selected minor trauma work undertaken at The Alfred.

The Registry collects patient information from:

• All major trauma admissions
• All trauma ICU admissions
• All trauma hospital transfers
• All deaths after injury

The main functions of The Alfred Trauma Registry are to chronicle trauma activity at The Alfred, monitor quality and service delivery and to supply information to the Victorian State Trauma Registry.

Alfred Trauma Registry for the Trauma Services

The Alfred Trauma Research Committee have been established in 2021 to review and facilitate studies, particularly those involving Alfred Trauma inpatients. It will also facilitate feedback from trauma study results across The Alfred.

As a researcher, any studies that involve major trauma patients, from trauma reception to discharge, needs to be considered by the Alfred Trauma Research Committee before progressing for a review by The Alfred Ethics Committee for ethical approval. Please submit an Expression of Interest, where the Research Manager, National Trauma Research Institute, will coordinate the Alfred Trauma Research Committee for consideration.

Who we care for

We are a state-wide service and care for people throughout Victoria who have suffered major and minor trauma injuries.

What to bring

Every time you come

• Medicare card
• Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
• Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it)
• Adverse drug alert card (if you have one)
• Previous X-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
• Medicines you need to take while you are here
• List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
• Glasses, hearing aid(s) and/or walking frame if needed

For an overnight (or longer) stay

• Dressing gown and slippers, or comfortable day clothes and shoes
• Personal hygiene items, such as shampoo, shaving equipment, toothpaste and deodorant
• Something to do, like a book to read, a magazine or an iPad or tablet with headphones

What not to bring for an overnight (or longer) stay

• Your handbag, wallet, purse or large amounts of cash
• Valuables, such as jewellery or watches
