Victorian cancer patients are set to benefit from the arrival of a world class scanner at The Alfred, transforming the speed with which the deadly disease is detected and treated.

The Alfred’s 2024 Critical Care Appeal is this year raising funds for a Quadra, a PET scanner that performs faster scans with a lower dose of radiation, while better able to identify smaller lesions.

The Alfred’s Director of Oncology, Prof Mark Shackleton, said The Alfred would be the first public hospital in Australia to use the lifesaving technology for cancer research, treatment and diagnosis.

“The significance of having the most powerful PET scanner in the world in the Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre at The Alfred will mean a transformative shift in the detection, treatment and cures for cancer patients,” Prof Shackleton said.

“Its impact will be revolutionary and the outcomes will have far-reaching benefits for all people living with cancer; not just in Australia, but globally.”

In April, the Federal and State Governments announced their backing of the technology, with a $12m investment from the Federal Government and $12m investment from the Victorian Government together with The Alfred Foundation.

The Critical Care Appeal is an annual fundraiser which helps The Alfred continue to provide the most critical and complex care to Victorians.
