Center: Colonel Su Winter, Director of Clinical Services at the Taji Military Complex, 20km north of Baghdad, 2017.

From Rwanda to Iraq, Colonel Su Winter has served in the Australian Army since medical school.

Dr Winter is currently a teacher and intensivist at The Alfred, helping critically ill patients in our ICU, while ready to be deployed at short notice if called upon.

Dr Winter was a first responder in the aftermath of the devastating 2002 bombing in Bali.

“I rounded up all my mates (medical colleagues) in Darwin, equipment, jumped on a plane and we were the first team in and helped with evacuation.”

During a career split between deployments overseas and work at Australian hospitals, Dr Winter and her husband raised a daughter.

“My daughter was six when I went to Afghanistan and it was interesting because I was the only mum (in my team).

“When I worked for a hospital in Sydney I used to keep a set of gear under my desk and the boss would come in and ask ‘will you be here tomorrow’? I’d say maybe!”

Dr Winter, thank you for what you’ve done and continue to do for our country and for our patients.
