Electrophysiology research
Electrophysiology research, headed by Professor Peter Kistler, are international leaders in the latest causes and treatments for heart rhythm disorders.
The group closely collaborates with teams across the country and internationally in the USA, UK and Canada to complete clinical trials furthering our understanding and treatments for heart rhythm disorders, in particular atrial fibrillation. At the Alfred, we pioneered the role of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation in heart failure leading to a paradigm shift in the management of these common conditions. We published the first trial exploring the role of alcohol in atrial fibrillation in the New England Journal. More recently we completed a larger international trial looking at the efficacy of different ablation strategies for atrial fibrillation.
A/Prof Sandeep Prabhu has ongoing studies in the role of catheter ablation and the need for ongoing medication in patients with heart failure (CAMERA-MRI II). A/Prof Alex Voskoboinik is exploring the most effective strategies for patients with recurrent loss of consciousness (SYNCOPE STOPPER) and improving outcomes in cardiac arrest. We have ongoing studies pioneering approaches and technologies in catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation.
