VIRCO Trial

This trial is studying whether taking an antiviral that has been used to treat influenza and also has activity against COVID will also help people recover from COVID and clear the virus more quickly than a placebo or sugar tablet. The antiviral medicine is called favipiravir.

Eligible people with COVID can be on this trial in the hospital or at home and will have to take an oral medication twice a day for 14 days and do a swab of the back of their throat every 2 days as a way of seeing if the antiviral medicine is clearing the virus more quickly. For people on the study at home we provide all the medicine and swabs, you will be monitored while on the study by our staff and there is no requirement to come into hospital after you have been diagnosed.

People recently diagnosed with COVID and interested in being involved can contact the Clinical research unit on 03 9076 6908
