Alfred Health offer opportunities within the Critical Care, Psychiatry and Surgical Streams.
Medical positions are recruited under the Basic Physician Training program and are separate to HMO3 positions.
Alfred Health is constantly expanding its services and position numbers change subject to operational requirements.

Alfred Health strongly encourages applications from internal employees. Please use your Alfred Health email address as this identifies you as an internal applicant in the system. Internal applicants are also only required to provide one referee rather than the usual three. The referee should be an Alfred Health consultant.

Please include a Cover Letter addressed to ‘Alfred Health Medical Workforce Unit’ which clearly outlines your career trajectory and aspirations.
For the summary of up to 200 words on your online application – you can provide a short summary of your Cover Letter or include something new. Either is acceptable.
You will receive a receipt of the successful submission of your application which confirms that the recruitment team have received your application.
You should list referees who have directly supervised your clinical practice, ideally someone at a Consultant Level. Please provide references from different rotations if possible.
If you don’t have anyone at a consultant level, then a referee at PGY4+ level is also acceptable.
The LiveHire system will ask some generic questions, such as availability, type of employment, etc. These are questions in the LiveHire system that cannot be disabled, so please select a response for these generic questions to proceed to the HMO application questions.
The responses to the generic questions are not taken into consideration when we review your application. However, you must answer all questions after the PMCV computer eligibility question.
Yes, you may apply to more than one position. For example, you may wish to apply for both HMO3 Surgical and Unaccredited Surgical Registrar positions. We ask that you make it known during the interview stage which position is your preference.

As a PGY3 or PGY3+, you can expect to be allocated to any of the following rotations.
*Those highlighted in blue indicate the HMO may be required to undertake higher duties as a Registrar during that rotation. You will be remunerated accordingly if this is the case.

Yes, you can expect to be rostered on night shifts as a HMO3.
Alfred Health JMS employed on a 12 month contract are entitled to 5 weeks of annual leave pro rata.
You will be able to preference whether you would like to take this in either 1x continuous 5 week block or 2x separate blocks (1x 2 week block and 1x 3week block).
We will request this information from you once your rotations have been finalised. Please note that some rotations will have leave built in, which will be outlined when you are preferencing your rotations.
You are paid under the Victorian Public Health Sector (AMA Victoria) – Doctors in Training Enterprise Agreement. Your employment and entitlements will be based in line with this agreement.
You will be paid fortnightly on the designated pay run, which normally occurs on a Wednesday.
On the occasion where you complete unrostered, you will be paid accordingly and should submit these requests before the payroll cut off dates for it to be included in the following pay run.

You can expect to rotate to any of the following health services/hospitals, where you will work as a Registrar and be paid at a Year 1 Registrar hourly rate.
Latrobe Regional Hospital, Barwon Health and Mildura Base Public Hospital.
Accommodation on rural placements will be provided to you by the host hospital.
Alfred Health staff’s supervision, support, and wellbeing is of huge importance. All junior medical staff are invited to partake in a mentor program to provide supervision and support throughout your time with Alfred Health. There are also speciality supervisors for each unit to provide career guidance and professional development. You will have a rotation supervisor for each term to assist with your learning, feedback, and assessments. The Medical Education Unit is always available for further support, as is the supervisor of training in your chosen field, Director of Prevocational Education, Director of Clinical Training and Director of Medical Services. Lastly there are online resources available through the Alfred Health Doctor’s Resource page.
Every Tuesday lunch is HMO Education. Your attendance is supported by your unit with lunch provided. The curriculum is tailored specifically to your needs in excelling to the best of your abilities. It is also a great way to socialise with your fellow colleagues and learn from each other. The program runs on a fortnightly timetable with General HMO Education alternating with stream specific education (Physician, Surgical, Critical Care).
In addition, each unit has their own education sessions specific to that speciality. This includes but is not limited to unit education meetings, journal club, grand round, bedside education.
Alfred Health prioritises the support of our Junior Medical Staff, including afterhours, and have multiple avenues for escalation to senior staff available at all times. At The Alfred campus, this includes having a senior consultant from the Intensive Care Unit within the hospital at all times (including overnight). During hours, senior registrars, fellows, and consultants are readily available to assist you in your role as well as having an onsite clinical lead (senior registrar/fellow) available overnight to assist.
Alfred Health Orientation occurs the first morning of the clinical year. This will include clinical and non-clinical information to enable you to put your best foot forward when starting with Alfred Health. Local unit orientation runs at the start of each term where unit specifics is covered as well as a ‘Unit Handbook’ available online via the ‘Doctor’s Resources’ section of the intranet.
Online training modules including Electronic Medical Record training, blood transfusion, radiation safety and Safety, Quality and Patient Centred Care are also assigned to JMS to complete via LEX. Occasionally HMOs do start at Alfred Health during the clinical year and orientation presentations are available to access online.
Accommodation on rural placements will be provided to you.
Staff car and bike parking is available at our sites with fees. being deducted pre-tax from your fortnightly pay. Further information will be provided as part of your on boarding with Alfred Health for new employees.
