Nursing Education has strong relationships with a number of leading universities in Australia.
Alfred Health has partnerships with a number of leading universities in Australia. Our main partner universities with postgraduate programs include La Trobe, Deakin and Monash University.
Postgraduate study is encouraged as part of our commitment to facilitating professional development of nurses within Alfred Health. Staff are supported and mentored by local clinical education teams, clinical support roles, specialty clinical staff and Nursing Education.
Postgraduate programs are available in numerous specialties with opportunities from Graduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters level. New specialty areas for postgraduate courses are currently being explored for the future.
Staff are also supported through Professional Development and Study Leave and the provision of Postgraduate scholarships. The Department of Health and Alfred Health Scholarships are offered at the end of each year to support staff members to undertake studies in these areas.

The Master of Advanced Nursing – Trauma course has been created, developed and designed in partnership with Monash University, Alfred Health and the National Trauma Research Institute to meet the demand for specialised nursing training in trauma care. The specialisation will be delivered by nurses who are experts in trauma care and trauma nursing.

Monash University in partnership with Alfred Health offer the Medical Surgical Nursing specialty for nurses working in any clinical area. This course is suitable for nurses working in both Acute and Sub-Acute clinical areas. This course is ideal for nurses working across all campuses.
The Medical Surgical nursing course is part of the Master of Advanced Clinical Nursing with Monash University. Students may exit at Graduate Certificate or Diploma level.
Nurses develop skills to become an effective medical or surgical nurse and develop proficiency in the holistic management of a range of complex patient presentations including Cardiac, Respiratory, Renal, Neurological, Orthopaedic, and more. Nurses will develop leaderships skills in nursing management to plan, implement and evaluate health care and develop core concepts in care of the deteriorating patient. This course is highly flexible utilising both online platforms (cloud) and face to face options for students.

The Postgraduate Certificate of Emergency Nursing aims to provide practice knowledge and leadership in specialist practice in emergency care. Undertaking this course requires elements of clinical assessments to measure individual clinical skill performance and ability to plan, implement and coordinate care in the emergency setting. This course is undertaken in partnership with Monash University and requires employment in the Emergency Department. There are options to continue to Diploma or Masters level.
The Alfred Health Emergency Department Transition to Specialty Practice Program REACT is approved for 12 unspecified credit points within the Master of Advanced Clinical Nursing at Monash University. This is for students having already completed the two emergency nursing units (certificate level) that may apply for unspecified credit within the Diploma or Masters level.
The Graduate Diploma Acute Care provides post graduate opportunity for Alfred Health Nurses working across a range of acute specialties. The Graduate Diploma Acute Care is a part of the Master of Nursing at Latrobe University.
The Acute Care stream focuses on advanced clinical assessment and management of acutely unwell patients from a variety of specialties. Nurses will also develop fundamental knowledge and skills required to care for patients in complex acute care nursing practice contexts and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, specialised acute care clinical proficiency, and effective communication skills.
The course is delivered using a blended learning approach with online learning, interactive study days, self-directed learning and written/clinical assessments. Clinical assessment components are assessed by Alfred Health education teams.

The Graduate Diploma of Cardiac Care is delivered in partnership with La Trobe University and Monash University. The course is designed to prepare nurses for specialty practice at an advanced level and offers an opportunity to advance your career in cardiac nursing over 12 months.
The course is delivered using a blended learning approach with a combination of online learning, face-to-face study days, and self-directed learning. A key feature of undertaking the course at The Alfred is the opportunity to gain clinical experience caring for patients with a broad range of acute cardiac conditions in a variety of specialties including interventional cardiology, advanced heart failure, mechanical assist devices, cardiac transplantation, valvular disease, and cardiothoracic surgery. In addition, students are supported by qualified and experienced Clinical Nurse Educators, and senior clinicians.
Clinical experience will involve rotations to the acute cardiac ward, ward 3 East. Supernumerary time will also be given in the cardiac catheter laboratory, cardiac theatres, and the intensive care unit. The student will enrol into the Masters level study and can elect to exit at Diploma or Masters levels.

La Trobe offers a 12 months Graduate Diploma of Perioperative Practices within the Master of Nursing Program.
Deakin University offers a 12 month Graduate Certificate of Perioperative Nursing within the Master of Nursing Practice. There are options to specialise further with perianaesthhesia and/or intraoperative nursing care to customize your learning. The course utilises inquiry based learning, videos and case studies and cloud classroom - online interactive learning platform for both the theoretical and clinical components.

Alfred Health partnered with Monash University to develop a Neuroscience PG nursing course; available for 2025.
Our neuroscience nursing stream is on campus with small class sizes, enabling you to interact with your fellow students, all of whom will be neuroscience nurses from many different areas of practice.

The Postgraduate Certificate of Intensive Care is run in conjunction with both Monash and Deakin Universities as part of the Masters programs. The postgraduate specialist courses link theoretical content and practice and prepares clinicians for advanced practice, leadership and management in the specialist field. The courses enable the development of advanced practice knowledge and leadership in specialist practice including skills to plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate health care with exit points at Certificate, Diploma or Masters level.

Qualification Allowance
An employee is entitled to a Qualification Allowance when:
- The employee has a relevant qualification in addition to their base nursing or midwifery qualification, or
- A base qualification that is a double degree or Masters degree
- A Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (where relevant)
NOTE: The new application process for the Qualification Allowance for Nurses is now via eHub Variations. Nurse to provide a certificated copy of the qualification for managers to upload via Staff Profile>Variation>Forms>Qualification Allowance - Nursing. Academic Support
Professorial academic support is also available from the support of a Clinical Chair in Nursing (a joint appointment with Deakin University). The Deakin/Alfred Nursing Research Centre is a collaborative partnership with the School of Nursing, Deakin University, which provides opportunities to inform nursing practice through research. Nurses can pursue further studies in research by undertaking the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) degree, Master of Nursing and PhD.
