Work experience opportunities at The Alfred

The Alfred work experience program is a five-day program (unless otherwise stated) where students nominate a department to observe. During their time at the Alfred students will see the day to day activities and get a feel for working in a hospital.

Applications are currently closed

Please note that currently we’re not undertaking work experience placements due to COVID-19, in accordance with Department of Health (DH) guidelines. We will update this page if anything changes.

Departments

The following departments are available for work experience.

Human Resources

As part of the Human Resources team we provide support to all departments across all our sites in the advertising, interviewing, selecting and hiring of new staff. We work closely with the Hiring Managers to make sure we proactively source the best talent to join Alfred Health. A lot of our correspondence is via email or over the phone with regular meetings to be able to understand the differing needs of each department.

Recruitment needs cover all disciplines including nursing, allied health, medicine and non-clinical.

Nursing

The Nursing Education department is committed to providing excellence in education to all sections of Nursing Services. Our overall goal is to act as a resource to Nursing Services through the provision of educational activities that support registered nurses to provide outstanding nursing care.

In this dynamic environment we are constantly exploring new approaches to education that will enhance the Nursing Services' continuous development and improvement. Students will observe the day to day activities on wards.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy aims to promote health by enabling people to perform meaningful and purposeful activities by helping individuals develop, recover or maintain daily living work skills. Occupational Therapists (OTs) help clients to improve their basic motor functions and reasoning abilities, but also to compensate for permanent loss of function. OTs work with individuals of all ages who have conditions that are mentally, physically, developmentally, socially and emotionally disabling.

Work experience students will have the opportunity to observe therapists working across aged care, neuro-musculoskeletal, plastics and medical specialties and observe assessments and interventions delivered to optimise occupational performance.

Placements in Occupational Therapy are for two days only.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are experts in movement and treat patients with musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory conditions. Physiotherapists at the Alfred Hospital work across the inpatient wards, intensive care unit, and outpatient exercise groups and outpatient clinics. The goal of physiotherapy is to restore normal movement and function. In the hospital environment this includes helping recover after an injury, a fall or illness and long term management of chronic conditions.

As part of the work experience program students will gain exposure across a wide variety of treatment areas. During this observational placement students will work with physiotherapists and have the opportunity to discuss cases, treatment options and talk to patients.
