Healthcare and health insurance
Australia provides public or universal (government) funded health care.
Medicare provides people living in Australia with access to health services “at low or no cost”.
Eligible Australian residents receive free treatment if they’re a patient in a public hospital and significantly reduced costs for care and medication received outside of the hospital environment.
While it is important to note that if you’re in Australia on a temporary visa, you may not be eligible for Medicare, certain countries provide Reciprocal Health Care Agreements (RHCA) so you may still be eligible for some level of cover.
For more visit the Services Australia page on Reciprocal Health Care Agreements.
If you’re not covered by an RHCA, it’s highly recommended that you take out a private health insurance or even travel insurance policy to cover you for any hospital or medical treatment.
Medicare provides the most up to date information about public health coverage in Australia or you can also visit one of their many offices.
