Prof Wendy Brown
Professor Brown completed her undergraduate medical and post-graduate surgical training through the Alfred. She completed her PhD at Monash University in 2001, and gained her Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in 2002. Following this she spent a year as a Fellow in the Advanced Laparoscopic and Upper GI Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. Returning to Melbourne in 2003, Professor Brown was appointed as a VMO surgeon to the Alfred Upper GI Surgical Unit and established herself in private practice, while continuing to pursue a busy academic career. Professor Brown has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, has attracted over $10million in research funding as well as achieving international academic recognition in her field. She has been the Senior Examiner for the RACS Court of Examiners General Surgery and is the past President of both the Australia & New Zealand Metabolic Obesity Surgery Society and the Australia & New Zealand Gastro Oesophageal Association.
In October 2015, Professor Brown was appointed Professor and Chair of the Monash University Department of Surgery at the Alfred. She is also Director of the Centre for Obesity Research & Education and the Director of the Bi-national Bariatric Surgery Register. At Alfred Health, Professor Brown’s leadership includes Acting Head of the Upper GI Surgery Unit in 2018 and Director of the newly formed Oesophago-Gastric & Bariatric Unit since November 2018. Most recently, she has been appointed to the Victorian Perioperative Consultative Council and has been asked to Chair the Surgical Sub-committee of this body.
