Dr Matthew Gutman
Dr Matthew Gutman is a Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon and serves as the lead for Epilepsy Surgery at The Alfred.
After completing his fellowship in neurosurgery Matthew undertook further sub-specialized training in flexible endoscopy in Mbale, Uganda before moving to the United Kingdom, to gain further training in functional neurosurgery at The National hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen’s Square) and Cambridge University Hospital (Addenbrooke’s) to refine his skills in neurovascular surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery. Matthew then returned to Australia to take up senior medical staff positions at The Alfred, Austin and Cabrini hospital’s whilst partaking in a paediatric epilepsy fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
In 2023 Matthew was awarded The Dr Lena McEwan and Dame Joyce Daws Churchill fellowship to develop advanced neuro-modulation and lesioning techniques for epilepsy and brain tumour surgery. He returned overseas to undertake further training at the Mayo Clinic, Columbia University Hospital and other centres in North America. In 2024 Matthew developed the first laser interstitial therapy (LITT) program in Victoria, which treats patients from across Australia.
