Prof Trevor Williams

Professor Trevor Williams is a Melbourne trained Respiratory Physician who was a Clinical Research Fellow for the Toronto Lung Transplant Program. Upon his return to Melbourne, he helped establish The Alfred Hospital Lung Transplant Program, which in the ensuing 30 years, has performed more than 1900 lung transplant procedures. His main clinical research interests relate to severe lung diseases including lung transplantation - particularly immunopathology of chronic rejection, pulmonary hypertension, exercise limitation in severe lung disease and development of novel bronchoscopic approaches to emphysema.

Prof Williams has been a principal investigator on many Phase 1, 2 and 3 clinical trials of pharmacological and non pharmacological therapies for COPD and pulmonary hypertension. He serves as a reviewer for all major international respiratory medicine journals and is a past President of the Pulmonary Hypertension Society of Australia and New Zealand.

His work has produced over 250 peer review publications, book chapters or reviews. He presently leads a large comprehensive Department of Respiratory Medicine. It includes the National Centre for Paediatric Lung Transplantation, State Centre for Cystic Fibrosis, State Centre for Pulmonary Hypertension (including CTEPH), Allergy and Immunology Program, Interstitial Lung Disease Program, Sleep and Ventilatory Failure program and the medical support team for one of the most active lung transplant programs worldwide.

In his role as Program Director : Alfred Heart and Lung he provides senior leadership to cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery Departments with international profile in heart failure, structural heart, heart transplantation, mechanical support and Pulmonary endarterectomy for CTEPH.
