Dr Marty Smith

Dr Marty Smith is the head of the Alfred HPB (HepatoPancreatoBiliary) Surgical Unit, and acting Head of the Department of General Surgery.

After completing a degree in Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Melbourne (BSc.). Dr Smith went on to study Medicine at the Flinders University of South Australia (BMBS). Dr Smith then trained in general surgery at The Alfred in Melbourne completing his fellowship in January 2004 (FRACS). He then undertook an Upper GI and Hepatobiliary fellowship at the Western Hospital in Melbourne before travelling overseas for further training.

In the UK, he completed an Upper GI (Oesophagogastric) fellowship at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge then a Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) Surgical fellowship at the Royal London Hospital. He then spent time working with the Liver transplant unit at Kings College hospital in London before returning to Australia

In addition to his clinical work at The Alfred, Dr Smith also works with the Victorian HPB surgery Group at Cabrini and provides general surgery consulting and operating at Kyneton hospital

Recently Dr Smith completed a Doctorate in Clinical Surgery (DCS) through the University of Sydney submitting a thesis on quality measures in acute general surgery-Quality in surgery remains an active area of interest in his work.

Dr Smith is actively involved in surgical teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, he is the current Deputy Senior Examiner in the RACS Court of Examiners (General Surgery) and is a past Board-Member of the ANZ HPB Association.
