Champion racehorse charms at Caulfield Hospital
Staff and patients at Caulfield Hospital interacted with former champion racehorse, Apache Cat, who visited the hospital today to celebrate the launch of this year’s Pin & Win fundraiser.
Clinical Services Director of Rehabilitation and Aged Care at Caulfield Hospital, Andrew Perta, said that Caulfield Hospital is proud to partner with the Melbourne Racing Club’s (MRC) Pin & Win program for the second year in a row.
“We’re thrilled to be named the official Pin & Win charity partner again this year, following our successful involvement in 2016,” Mr Perta said.
“Funds raised will go towards redeveloping our hydrotherapy centre at Caulfield Hospital, which is visited by almost 700 people each week.”
Launch attendees also included racing industry officials and former jockey, Leigh Woodgate, who benefited from rehabilitation sessions at Caulfield Hospital for two and a half years after she was flown to The Alfred in 1994 following a tragic accident.
“Leigh’s story perfectly illustrates the value of our hydrotherapy program. Like Leigh, we care for many of Victoria’s trauma patients, who move from The Alfred through to Caulfield Hospital to begin rehabilitation,” Mr Perta said.
“For many of our rehabilitation patients, the hydrotherapy pool, which opened almost 30 years ago, is an integral part of their care. The pool allows them to move in a supported way – which they can’t do on land.
“Through this partnership we’ll be able to raise funds and further develop the rehabilitation services that support our local community as well as people from across the state.”
Melbourne Racing Club Foundation Chairman, Patricia Faulkner, said the Pin & Win is one of five major fundraising initiatives each year and the MRC Foundation is proud to be supporting The Alfred Foundation in its second year.
“Supporting local community and charitable organisations are two of the MRC Foundation’s three pillars and the sale of pins at our racecourses and Pegasus Leisure Group venues enables us to significantly contribute to the redevelopment of the hydrotherapy centre, which is a vital community resource for the local community,” Ms Faulkner said.
Pins are sold at Alfred Health campuses, including Caulfield Hospital and The Alfred as well as all Melbourne Racing Club racecourses and Pegasus Leisure Group venues on race days in the lead up to and during the 2017 BMW Caulfield Cup Carnival.
