Trauma nurses test out the new ED corridor
Critical care nurses take their first walk down the new corridor linking our Emergency and Trauma Centre to the hospital.

The corridor linking The Alfred’s main reception to the Emergency and Trauma Centre reopened this week, as redevelopment works continue to progress.

The major project is more than two-thirds complete, with builders now turning their attention to developing the new pharmacy area, acute staff base, and additional trauma bay.

Director of the centre, Dr de Villiers Smit said this phase of construction was the most visible to patients but all Victorians would soon have a refurbished and expanded emergency and trauma centre to be proud of.

“The completed centre will include more private treatment spaces – providing greater dignity for our patients – and support the modern way we provide emergency care,” Dr Smit said.

“Some disruption will continue for the next few months and I’m thankful to our patients and visitors who continue to be so understanding.

“It really is tremendous – our staff are dedicated and adapt to whatever they need to in order to maintain such a high level of care.  I’m very fortunate to work with such a terrific team.”

Work on the Eva and Les Erdi Emergency and Trauma Centre redevelopment is expected to conclude in March 2018.
