Honouring wartime Alfred nurses

29 April 2019

The Alfred Hospital Nurses League took part in the march to the Shrine of Remembrance on ANZAC Day 2019.

The group of forty included current Alfred Health nurses and family of former nurses. Participants were assigned a WWI nurse to research before the event and march in her honour.

Jaqui Schranz joined the group for the march, the great granddaughter of Alfred nurse Alice Ross-King, who was awarded the Military Medal in 1917 for bravery when the hospital she was working in was bombed.

The participants discovered many interesting facts about the dedicated group of nurses who served during the war, including one who was a relative.

Thank you to the Alfred Hospital Nurses Leagues Pru Cox for organising and for the support of the Returned Nurses Club, RSL branch, and president, Col. Jan McCarthy.
