Major donor recognised as The Alfred’s trauma centre redevelopment is announced

30 June 2015

Work on a major expansion and redevelopment of The Alfred's Emergency and Trauma Centre will commence early in 2016 thanks to the generosity of a Melbourne business-woman.

The gift from Mrs Eva Erdi, through the Eva and Les Erdi Humanitarian Charitable Foundation is the single largest donation ever given to The Alfred.

Alfred Health Chief Executive, A/Prof Andrew Way said there are many individuals who have supported the hospital's Bigger and Better Emergency and Trauma Centre Appeal over the past 18-months, but described this donation as ‘truly remarkable'.

"In addition to Government funding, The Alfred is fortunate to receive significant community support, and the generosity of Mrs Eva Erdi and her foundation is testament to the philanthropic spirit that exists throughout Victoria," A/Prof Way said.

Mrs Erdi was publicly thanked at an event held at The Alfred on Tuesday afternoon, which acknowledged her gift, and the memory of her late-husband Les Erdi, by honouring the contribution with the establishment of the Eva and Les Erdi Emergency and Trauma Centre.

The Alfred's Emergency and Trauma Centre provides treatment for more than 60,000 Victorians each year - including more than 1,200 critically injured trauma patients brought in by air and road.

The centre's redevelopment and expansion will bring many improvements to emergency care for Victorians in need - including more treatment areas, and the creation of an additional (fifth) trauma bay for the nation's busiest trauma centre.

Eva and Les Erdi founded the ErdiGroup and grew it into a successful privately owned and operated Australian company. It consists of a collection of hotels and businesses across the country.
